The COVID-19 Emergency Task Force is sharing the following information about changes to voting procedures due to the pandemic, on behalf of the Town of Shelburne Chief Elections Official.

There are three options for voting in the State Primary election on September 1 and the State and presidential election on November 3: Voting By Mail, Early In-person Voting, and In-person Voting on Election Day.

Voting by Mail

This is the safest option in terms of COVID-19 exposure. Voters must apply to use this option. (The deadline for the application to be received at the Town Clerk’s office is 5 PM on August 26 for the September election and 5 PM on October 28 for the November election.)

Voters who apply to vote by mail will receive a ballot package in the postal mail, which they must complete and return. Please note that many ballots for the September election have been mailed to voters who already applied. Voters who applied and do not receive their ballot by August 23 should call the Town Clerk at 625-0300, ext. 3.

There are two ways to return a Vote By-Mail ballot:

  1. Official Shelburne ballot boxDeposit the ballot in the drop-off box (shown here). The drop-off box will be available for all elections, starting with the Primary in September. This secure drop-off box will be installed at the Town Hall on or about August 20, and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The deadline for depositing a ballot in the drop-off box is 8 PM on election day.

  2. Return the ballot by postal mail.

Keep in mind that the completed ballot must be received by the Chief Elections Official by 8 PM on election day for it to be counted. Leave enough time for the postal service to deliver in advance of the deadline. Any ballot received after election day will NOT be counted.

Early In-Person Voting

Early in-person voting for the September 2020 election is available at the Cowell Gym during the following dates and times:

  • Saturday, August 22, 10 AM - 2 PM
  • Sunday, August 23, 10 AM - 2 PM
  • Monday, August 24, 10 AM - 4 PM
  • Tuesday, August 25, 10 AM - 4 PM
  • Thursday, August 27, 10 AM - 4 PM

Dates and times for early in-person voting for the November election have not yet been scheduled.

In-Person Voting on Election Day

In-person voting on election day at the Cowell Gym is available from 7 AM to 8 PM on September 1 and November 3.

COVID-19 mitigation measures will be implemented during all in-person voting, including the use of masks or facial coverings, adequate social distancing, limits on the number of people allowed inside the polling place at the same time, and hand hygiene protocols.

Please contact the Town Clerk at 625-0300, ext. 3 with any questions.
