1 Tower Trail Interpretive Panel w Al small imageOpen Space Committee: Guided Hike along part of Shelburne’s Fire Tower Trail System (but, not climbing to the tower) – Saturday, August 13, 9:00 AM, meet at Arms Library & then a ½ -mile drive to trailhead on Route 2 & Halligan Ave.

Guided Fire Tower & Big Trees Trail Hike – The Shelburne Open Space Committee, Arms Library, and Deerfield River Watershed Association have partnered to lead a scenic and educational hike along Shelburne Trails Fire Tower and Big Trees interpretive trail system. A former Natural Resource Specialist/Forester will lead the hike through private lands he manages for recreation. There are 7 interpretive panels and many tree identification tags to see along the way. We may detour to a scenic overlook.

What to Bring: Hikers should wear good walking sneakers or hiking boots and bring plenty of water to drink, a snack, sunscreen, and tick repellant or treatment. (The best tick treatment is to pretreat your clothing with Permethrin.)

What to Know: We will not be climbing all of the way to the Fire Tower. This hike is moderate and ½ is uphill, but not too steep. Hikers should have a medium level of skill, but more endurance for this 1 ½ mile round trip hike. There will be plenty of discussion stops along the way. The hike will most likely take about two hours. Where to Meet: We will first gather on the steps of the Shelburne Falls Arms Library at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 13th. From there we will all drive or carpool 1/2 mile to the trailhead on Route 2 & Halligan Ave. Masks are required in any carpool vehicles.

If you have any questions, or would like to pre-register (you will be notified in case of a need to reschedule) contact Jim at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. See you there!

The Arms has multiple copies of the book available. Large print and audio are available through CW/MARS.

THE ARMS WILL BE CLOSED TODAY, JANUARY 29TH, due to the incoming storm. We all need to keep folks safe, and let the highway people do their work. Please, everyone stay off the roads if you can, stay warm and stay safe.

The Arms is going to begin opening in Sundays, 12-3 p.m., beginning February 5th. Away from the busyness of the work week, we think it will be a sweet time for families to read together in the children's room, catch up with neighbors, read the newspapers in our sunny, southern facing reading room, or just relax with a good book in one of our comfy chairs.
